Investigating Household Food Security in Northern First Nations: A Community-Based Exploration of Pathways toward Food Sovereignty
Indigenous peoples in remote First Nations are at a high-risk of diet-related illness due to the impacts of climate change on access to wild plants and animals. Compounded by the extremely high costs of nutrient-deficient, store-bought foods, Indigenous peoples experience some of the highest rates of food insecurity in Canada. This research will explore experiences of household food security among families in four northern First Nations. Baseline results will inform the development of community-owned and accessed materials with information to support teaching children and families about food systems and growing in the North.
