I hope to develop a greater understanding of the issues around women in sport in rural communities from the gender and intersectionality lens. Determining what are the barriers to entry and what as a government and community we can do to support changes in this area. The objective of the research would be to identify the positive correlation between access and ability to participate in sports and long-term ‘success’. What ‘success’ is defined as would be determined in the research from the likelihood of graduating high school and completing post-secondary to healthy active lifestyle habits. Using an integrated and systematic approach I will determine the factors that contribute to female participation in sports and policies that can better support this while looking to mitigate the factors that limit interest and participation.
